666 5th Avenue NY | Uniquo Apparel

666 Quinta 5ta Avenida Nueva York Uniquo

To those familiar with this Japanese apparel retailer, this is certainly it’s largest location anywhere in the world. Uniquo sells core basics rather than trendy knock-offs. Uniqlo’s clothing is “made for all” and doesn’t cater to one specific age group or demographic. At a time when consumers are tightening their belts, it also helps that the clothing is affordable, with jeans that cost as little as $9.90 and cashmere sweaters that go for $49.90.

Along with these items, Uniqlo is bullish on underthings. Several shirts come with molded built-in bras, lending them a rubber sex doll aspect. Panties are printed with miniature cherries, a hint of organic matter rare for the store, where even the cashmere, a specialty, feels squeaky and synthetic in the hand, and comes in Pepto-Bismol pink and dehydrated teals.

Fast Retailing president and chief executive officer Tadashi Yanai – Japan’s richest man, according to Forbes – is determined that the Uniqlo name will become as ubiquitous elsewhere as it is in Japan. At home, Uniqlo’s network stretches to nearly 800 stores, many of them small. It operates 125 stores outside Japan, mostly in Asia.
